GMail issue: Application-specific password required

Post by pax0707 »

Everything was working fine, now I'm getting:

Code: Select all

IllegalArgumentException: Gmail password must be a 16-digit passcode: Application-specific password required

For security reasons you can't just use your Google account password. You have to create a separate App Password for Mail.

It looks like Google's own instructions no longer work. Does anyone know how to set an application specific password now that their "Account Settings" API has changed? Is it possible to send filebot emails from a Yahoo.com or Outlook.com account if not, or only gmail?

Thanks.

I just tried it. Didn't read anything, clicked the first link. It took me 5 seconds to create an App Password.

So strange. I do the same thing and that is not even an option for me. I included a screenshot. Can you only use a Gmail address to send from?

Have you tried clicking on "Access for less secure apps" and see what happens if you disable that? Then you'll probably have the option of creating app passwords.

Though, I'd recommend PushBullet notifications instead of email notifications.

I'm having the same problem - used to send email, now it won't. I have the same lack of option to add an app from gmail.

If you enable 2-step verification then you definitely have that option. I'm pretty sure you can activate App Passwords even without 2-step verification.

I don't want to turn on 2-step and break every application I currently have accessing my Gmail account... but from the link above (https://support.google.com/mail/answer/1173270?hl=en) it says, "

1. Visit the Authorizing applications & sites page (pictured below) under your Google Account settings.
2. Under the Application-specific passwords section, enter a descriptive name for the application (label 1) you want to authorize, such as "AdWords Editor – Desktop," then click “Generate application-specific password" (label 2).

But there is NO section called Application-specific passwords... it just doesn't exist.

Yes? No? Maybe? What happened?

There is no option to create app specific passwords without 2step enabled.

Only "Access for less secure apps Disable / Enable.

It's enabled for me.

It was working fine till Dec 21 (2 days ago), last mail sent.

With and without enable access.
Both times asks for app specific password.

To answer the questions, if we disable less secure apps - it changes the status of less secure apps to "blocked". Then reenable them and still no option to create "app specific passwords" as is indicated in the google help page.

If you can't use 2-step verification and/or create app passwords then I recommend using PushBullet instead.

Once you activate 2-step verification for your Google account you'll be able to create Mail App Passwords.

Ok, made it work with 2-step - but don't want to use 2-step for my Gmail... so turned it back off... maybe Gmail will fix their site to allow "less secure apps" again - dunno.

You suggested using pushbullet... from the AMC post it shows --def pushbullet=apikey as the command to use pushbullet - but how do we create the apikey? I *do* have a pushbullet account set up now on Chrome on my Mac and on my Timer...

You will find your PushBullet APIKEY (i.e. Access Token) in your Account Settings on the PushBullet website.

Got it! Of course, they don't make Account Settings readily visible... but it works from: https://www.pushbullet.com/account

Thanks again rednoah for all the help, still loving FB.

Caved in and enabled 2step, generated app password and all works fine again.

When you think about it it's silly that Gmail doesn't allow you to generate app passwords without 2step.
