There's no viable data source. Definitely none with an API as far as I know.

*bump*

This is the only topic I could easily find about requesting support for renaming game ROMs - just wanted to point out that thegamesdb.net now exists, and has a public API http://wiki.thegamesdb.net/index.php/API_Introduction.

TheGameDB.net has an API and decent database.

Yes, I am resurrecting a post that is ~5 years old, but this is a valid request. I love FileBot and use it for movies and TV shows, I would love to see it work with all of my classic games.

The best site for this would be https://thegamesdb.net/ and they have an API as well. (https://api.thegamesdb.net/)

Thanks!

This would be really convenient now lots of people use front ends that download metadata for roms, managing all that stuff is a pretty big task for 1000s of roms even if a small percentage are mislabeled

First class support akin to Movie / Episode naming is not planned. That said, you could always use Plain File Mode and then have your own custom code figure it out, maybe via metadata from the file itself, maybe via some remote database.

 A 3rd party could build a service for that like so:
