what does it mean when name fields are red?

When I'm renaming files sometimes the New Names list all have red fields. When I click on one it'll show a yellow warning triangle. Is there something I should click to read a warning or error message?
Also when I click on a red name, the yellow extension shows part of the file name instead of the extension. Does this indicate something I should know about?
Interestingly, the rename seems to work fine even when they are red.
