P4436750 has been activated 150+ times from many different countries on many different operating systems, and has thus been flagged by the automated license activation system.

Most likely, you have either shared your license, or your license has been stolen and then shared on the internet.

:?: Did you purchase your license directly from this website?

:?: Did you share your license with someone on the internet, or did someone share the license with you on the internet?

I've also been banned. I'm running in docker and didn't have /data setup, so that's been fixed now.

Hello
I didn't share my license P4436750 with anyone.
Yes, I bought my license directly on the site.
It is installed on a single PC under WIN X but I use ExpressVPN which can explain the different countries.

Hello, I'm on the list: P5762479

Can you help me out?

My script runs hourly on the same configuration since day one (September 2018) and I recently found out that it is banned. I've changed it to once per day if that was the matter. I cannot understand the conflict. Thanks in advance.

Please check the list of things not to do, and see if you're doing something along those lines:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9594

Running FileBot once per day or every second doesn't matter, as long as you don't delete the application data folder in between runs.

 Once you've identified and fixed the problem, I can re-instate your license number.

P7060103 has been unbanned. Just run filebot --license FileBot_License_P7060103.psm (ideally with the latest FileBot 4.8.5) once again and it should work again.

Code: Select all

P4241619 receiving LicenseError: Banned due to abuse
Filebot is called by cronjob every 5 minutes, but I've been running it this way for months. I've activated the license perhaps 6 times over the past year as I rebuild the system.

:!: The logs show 100+ license activations in the last 30 days.

You will find a log entry such as this for each license activation:

Code: Select all

Activate License P4241619
If you see this log message for every single run, then you're doing something wrong, probably something akin to what's outlined here:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9594

Okay I'm looking into it

But this is how I'm calling filebot and I'm not seeing any red flags

Code: Select all

filebot -script fn:amc --output /media/plexdrive --action move -non-strict /media/plexdrive/unsorted/ --log-file /media/plexdrive/amc.log --def excludeList=/media/plexdrive/amc.txt exec="chmod -R 777 '{output}/'" clean=y

The command is fine. The problem is unrelated to FileBot itself, and cannot be fixed by making changes to FileBot or filebot calls. So I can't help you fix the problem, but I can give you tips to maybe figure it out.

If your license has been banned, that that would indicate that the application data folder is deleted before or after each run:

Code: Select all

DATA: /home/<user>/snap/filebot/24/data
:!: Since you're using cron, the application context (e.g. user, home, etc) is likely completely different, and not the same as running commands in your own shell.

:!: If you're running snap within cron, unexpected things might happen. Regardless, FileBot requires its application data folder to be persistent, and not deleted before or after each run.

I've just reinstated P4241619 so you can play with it and see what's going on. Just keep a watch out for these Activate License log messages and make sure they don't appear for each successive run.

Seems to be fixed now, no more 'Activate License' messages.

For anyone else who runs into similar issue all I did was give the /home/<user>/snap/filebot/ directory WRX permissions for all users.

Wouldn't advise it if you're security conscious but for my purposes it's fine.

Hi I'm on the last list PX5853842
not sure why My script is calling so many activations, I can post it here?
I'm running it in a freenas jail
application data is a persistent location
I was running it on a dedicated server which is now gone.

The OP explains in detail what's not working correctly (i.e. application state is lost) and likely culprits. It's gonna be something along those lines.

 viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9594

You have more than 10000 license activations accounting for more license activations than almost all other users combined, so something is definitely off.

Please find a fix the problem first. And then I can re-activate your license.

#################################################################################333

:!: Your license has been activated 31527 times. 2-3 times would be normal.

e.g.

Code: Select all

06-29 08:08:57	P6354964	US

06-29 08:10:30	P6354964	US
06-29 08:10:43	P6354964	US
06-29 08:10:56	P6354964	US
06-29 08:11:09	P6354964	US
06-29 08:11:23	P6354964	US
06-29 08:11:35	P6354964	US
06-29 08:11:49	P6354964	US
06-29 08:12:02	P6354964	US
06-29 08:12:20	P6354964	US
06-29 08:12:33	P6354964	US
06-29 08:12:46	P6354964	US
06-29 08:12:59	P6354964	US
You'll need to fix the issue on your end, as described in this post:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9594

If your docker container is stateless, then it's gonna be as if FileBot is running for the first time every time, which leads to heavy abuse of online resources since it effectively disables all local caching:
https://hub.docker.com/r/rednoah/filebot/

Once you have identified and fixed the issue, then I can unban your license.

Chris wrote: Hi, I'm not sure why this is happening. I just tried clearing the filebot cache, so hopefully that will help. I'm running filebot with cron every half hour with the command (below) command, but I'm not seeing it doing anything at the link you provided that seems like it would cause this issue.

Code: Select all

0,30 * * * * filebot -script fn:amc --output "/media/datahaus/Video" --action move --conflict skip -non-strict "/home/ubuntu/Downloads/deluge/completed" --log-file amc.log --def seriesFormat="/media/datahaus/Video/TV/{plex.tail}" movieFormat="/media/datahaus/Video/Movies/{plex.name}" unsorted=y music=y artwork=y exludeList=amcExclude.txt -no-xattr
Note that clearing the cache will not solve the problem. The problem is the cache being clear before each and every run, as if FileBot is running for the first time, every time.

The FileBot application data folder / cache is empty every time filebot is called, but why that happens in your particular setup, only you can figure out. A likely reason is that cron doesn't work the way you think it does.

Ask yourself:
* What user is calling cron tasks?
* Where is the user home for these cron tasks?
* Perhaps cron is set to use a temporary user home that is not persisted after the cron job is done?

 You'll want your tasks to be called with your user, and not as root.
 You'll want $HOME to point at your user home, and not / or /root or whatever it may be.

Please read (6.) on how you can verify yourself if it's working correctly or not:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9594#p40629

:?: Please share with us your findings, so that we can add possible cron related issues to the list.

Running FileBot on a machine with no disk space does not work, it may appear to work, but it will work badly with caching effectively disabled:

In the past, before knowing that filebot has a paid version, I was using the free one. Which used to work great.
However I wanted to support your work and this awesome program
Note that this is not about the license, the license abuse is just a symptom, that tells us caching is disabled, which means instead of downloading ~10 MB per month (like everyone else) you are downloading 10 MB * 5.000 times per month, which costs me an extra 50 GB of traffic per month / 600 GB per year.

I'm sorry to inconvenience you to fix your setup, but a single user demanding 5.000 times more network resources than an average user, is not acceptable, regardless of whether or not FileBot is free or paid software.

Hi I received a mail about my license abuse.

I see that some times when I run filebot I get the license message without mi interaction, maybe a bug o its my error?

Give me time to see if I put filebot with the parameter licence in a script...

Thanks

:!: You are activating your license 300+ times per day. A properly configured FileBot instance would do so no more than once per month.

The warning email you have received should include detailed activation logs. If you're not seeing corresponding log records on your end, then you're not collecting logs, or not looking at the logs.

What are you trying to do here? You're simply searching *.sh shell scripts for the keyword filebot which definitely won't ever yield any log records of any kind...

Code: Select all

find . -name "*.sh*" -exec grep filebot {} ';'
If you were to check for license activation events, the corresponding grep command would look more like this:

Code: Select all

grep "Activate License" /path/my/amc.log

:!: If you didn't set a --log-file and didn't redirect IO, then you wouldn't find any logs, as there aren't any.

 I recommend setting the --log-file to an absolute file path that you can find and check easily.

You've somehow effectively disabled application state and caching, leading filebot to believe it's running for the first time each and every time, leading to unnecessary abuse of online resources (license abuse warnings usually being the first symptom, though 3rd party services may also auto-ban you eventually).

Please read the original post for details, if you have not done so already, since it explains things in detail and gives a non-exhaustive list of potential issues:

The error message just says FileBot didn’t shut down normally, but was somehow killed by the operating system, or crashed. That too breaks caching.

 IF you get this message repeatedly, then the next step is to figure out why the filebot process is killed.

Unfortunately, without access to your screen and keyboard, I cannot really help in this case. Perhaps you have a Linux-savvy friend that can help you out?

My first steps towards figuring out the root cause would be as follows:
* Make sure you're using the latest version of FileBot
* According to (7.) confirm the problem for yourself, so that you can later on check if the problem is solved or not
* Read (1.) to (3.) and understand the common theme, and then try to figure out what's going awry in your setup
* Systematically narrow down what's going on, check where filebot is writing application data files, and then trace what's happening to those files before and after filebot is running, to find out why they're magically disappearing between runs.

EDIT:

 Note that I'm happy to just offer a refund if you choose not to investigate the issue. Maybe there's a simple cause. Maybe it'll take many many hours to find this simple cause. Maybe it's not going to be easy.

Sorry, that kinda time-intensive one-on-one service is not currently possible.

Perhaps you could create a new thread, describe what you have tried so far, describe your setup, share your logs and scripts and cron config, etc. And then we can try to home in on the cause step by step. It'll be difficult, but you'll learn many useful skills on the way.

I don't have an automated setup, I just click on the exe to open Filebot, so I don't know how it possibly could be activated multiple times.....
Well, logs are logs, and I can't tell you what to do since it's definitely a client-side problem. You could check your logs, and see if you get the corresponding "Activate License" entires.

Reasons the system might have flagged your license:
1. Activated from 5+ countries in a short period of time (normal would be 1-2)
2. Activated many times in a short period of time (normal would be 1-5 times per month)

 Note that fixing (2.) will also alleviate (1.) as less activations means less activations from different countries.

The first post of this thread should give you the general idea as what's going on, application state is reset between runs, leading to premature "Activate License" requests. This could be for any number of reasons. Some guy had a 3rd party tool that periodically deleted all application data files. Could be anything though. Keeping logs and checking them would be a good first step to figure it out.

 Some users may have genuine use cases, that are unfortunately virtual indistinguishable for abuse, in which case I'm happy to just offer a refund.

Well, now is probably the time to learn how to get into the logs and have a look. See FAQ for details.

 You will have received this weeks "Activate License" logs for your license via email. You can cross-reference that with your local logs and see if it matches up.

:!: If it does not match up, then unauthorized 3rd parties may indeed have had access to your license file one way or another, which would be disturbing to say the least.

My script runs the following on a scheduled task every 30 minutes.

Code: Select all

filebot -script fn:amc --output "\\192.168.1.1\data\media\movies" --action move -non-strict "\\192.168.1.1\data\media\moviestobeprocessed" --def movieFormat="\\192.168.1.1\data\media\{plex}"
exit
I cannot see anything wrong with that script based on your linked forum thread.
At first glance. You're not (6.) using a log file, so you won't be able to (7.) check the log to check if everything is in order. Those would be the first steps so you yourself can confirm that things are working correctly / are not working correctly.

The next step would then be to figure out why things are not working on your machine. This could be for any number of reasons, specific to your machine and setup, something only you can figure out. Whatever it may be, it results in FileBot thinking it's running for the first time, every time.

 Among things listed in the OP, it could be running out of disk space, running things as temporary user each time, having 3rd party tools that regularly delete %APP_DATA% files, etc. Anything that could lead to FileBot not being able to remember things. On Windows this is extremely rare, but it's your machine, so you have, directly or indirectly, absolute control over FileBot's memory / persistent storage and something is off in this regard.

DO check your --log-file once in a while to see if everything is in order:

Code: Select all

grep "Activate License" /path/to/log

Code: Select all

Activate License P1234567
:!: Activate License P1234567 MUST NOT show up in your log for each and every filebot call. You will see this message once or twice per month during normal usage. If you see this message hundreds of times per day, then you need to fix your setup. (NOTE: Activate License logging requires FileBot 4.8.5 or higher)

:!: The FileBot log file does not include system console output. Please read Shell Script Debugging for Beginners on how to collect complete console output including crash dumps and device errors. (NOTE: extremely useful for debugging strange issues)
What does the log say? How many Activate License lines did you find?

Nevertheless. Your setup is broken now, and has been for the last ~4 weeks, because you have been receiving warning emails every week for the last ~3 weeks with detailed logs about your license activations.

I will manually unban your license, but if you don't resolve the underlying issue, whatever it may be, the system will auto-ban you again.

"banned due to abuse" is preceded by no less than 3 warning emails with detailed license activation logs, so you can review what you're doing, and check that against frequent user errors:

 Since it's your machine(s), only you can figure out what's going on your machine(s) specifically. The activation logs will help you narrow down on the issue though.

Please check your spam folder. The email will have been sent to the one on your license. A license can be unblocked, but it'd be best to first figure out why it might have been banned in the first place, because it'll likely get auto-banned again the root cause is not fixed.

Could those emails not have been sent?
Email were sent on 10 Apr, 17 Apr and 24 Apr. Gmail will keep Spam for a month, but if you're using other providers, and don't regularly check your Spam, then you might have missed them. I'll see if I can forward you the most recent one again.

 The first step is to check your local logs as explained in (6.) and (7.) and to confirm the number of licence activations based on your own local log files. :?: What were your findings?
Thanks rednoah, I just received the emails you have sent me now.
On the 21st and 22nd, I was playing on one of my servers with a script and I had to make many continuous requests.

I have marked @ filebot.net as secure mail. Can you unlock my license please.
Thank you.

If your license has been banned, then you will have received multiple warning emails with more detailed information.

Hi I have some issues - my license seems to be unbaned after sending message. But as long as I register from cmd line on my synology and run cmd line on synology it works fine, BUT when I use script from same account it returns
LicenseError: Banned due to abuse. Please read https://www.filebot.net/error/429.html for details.

Should I reboot and setup license on boot?

Explicitly calling filebot --license will do the trick in most cases, but on Synology NAS the license key path is shared across for all user accounts, while license activation status is specific to each user account, so you may need to filebot --license once for each user account.

 On Synology NAS, each $USER will has it's own FileBot application data folder and caches and so filebot --license and -clear-cache work only within the context of the current calling $USER, and thus can only fix license activation status for the current calling $USER due to file permissions.

 On Synology NAS, the easiest way to reset everything is to just uninstall the FileBot package completely via Synology DSM. That will clear all FileBot application data for all users.

What are you doing? What does the log say?

 If you see license activations multiple times per day, then you're likely accidentally deleting application state:
