In addition to the Patreon experiment, I've been hard at work to bring back full support for all platforms including Linux and Windows 7. FileBot now supports a cross-platform custom license model, which means you can purchase a FileBot license directly (i.e. not via the Microsoft Store / Mac App Store) and then use your personal license on all your machines. Windows 7 / 8 / Server / 10 LTSB, Mac OS X Yosemite or higher and Desktop Linux / Headless Linux / Embedded Linux are fully supported. The Linux Portable TAR build should mostly work on all POSIX platforms such as FreeBSD or Solaris as well.
$ filebot -rename Firefly.1x01.mp4
License Error: UNREGISTERED
FileBot requires a valid license. Please run `filebot --license *.psm` to install your FileBot license.
Notes:
The Windows Portable ZIP package requires Oracle Java 10 (i.e. 32-bit Windows is not supported)
The Linux Portable TAR package requires Java 8 (with full support for x86_64 and i686 and slightly limited support for armv7l and aarch64)
Larger packages (>= 80 MB) include an embedded JRE and thus do not require Java. Smaller packages require you to install Java 10 (Windows ZIP / Mac APP / Linux DEB) or Java 8 (Linux Portable TAR)
The latest Ubuntu SNAP package has been uploaded to the official repository and can be installed via snap install filebot.
If you're using FileBot Node, you may need to upgrade to FileBot Node 0.2.8.
FileBot 4.8.2 is in BETA. It should mostly work. But a lot has changed and a few things might be broken.
Feedback is welcome, especially in regards to the licensing / pricing model and the Paddle checkout / payment experience. Feel free to use this thread for discussion and bug reports.

Under what circumstances would I have to purchase a new license? After a point release?
If you purchase a 1-year license then that license will expire after 1 year and you will have to purchase a new license then, regardless of the point release you're using. This license model is based on time and not specific to any release or point release. You can think of it like a subscription but without automatic renewal.
Some features will work without a license. However, FileBot will ask for a license when you are about to rename files and give you purchase / license selection options. Same applies to both GUI and command-line tools.
Docker images will be available after the final release. You can use the deb / tar packages in the meanwhile.
This suits my situation perfectly - I'm using the Synology package (90%) and the Windows application (when it needs some manual intervention). I'm happy to purchase the annual licence, however, I don't see the option anywhere on the website.
The website has not been updated yet. The new release will tell you how to purchase and install a license when necessary, i.e. when you're about to rename files. You don't need to worry about it upfront. So just grab a release and go with the flow.
If you manage to rename / move files without a license, let me know ASAP.
Paddle purchasing process was painless, license installed no problem. I run AMC script invoked from Transmission and will report back later if there are any problems.

I asked him at least the first question you asked before.. the "Will the the Windows Store version still get updates?" and he has said yes.. The windows store version will still get updates, and won't be affected by this licensing stuff.. As for the linux build question, yes you will have to buy a new license for linux.

Yes, of course.

Unfortunately, it's not possible to transfer a purchase from the Microsoft Store or Mac App Store and convert it into a FileBot Universal License. The systems are completely separate and independent.
Did you check your email? Maybe in the spam folder? You will have received your license twice, once from Paddle with your confirmation, and once from FileBot with the *.psm file attached.

Excuse me, I have already received it. I had only seen the Paddle mails.
One last thing, How do I install the .psm file? I must do it wrong because I get an error.
FileBot Node is running filebot as admin user. If you run filebot --license *.psm then the license will be installed for your current user, so make sure you're logged in as admin user, and not root, or any other custom user.
You can use this command to see which user folder is configured as application data folder:

That's somewhat inconvenient though, can't we install the license globally on linux? My filebot is initiated by the debian-transmission user after Transmission completes the torrent, but it won't run for the reason above. I guess I could mess around with setting a shell for that user (currently /bin/false) and install it that way, but it seems kind of "hacky".
Or should I install filebot node just to install the license file?
You can call filebot --license as the debian-transmission user once and then it'll work when FileBot is called by transmission later on.
shell /bin/false doesn't prevent transmission from calling filebot, so there should be a way for you to execute filebot as that user just like transmission does. Probably with su or sudo but Google is gonna be a more helpful Linux help resource than me.
It's of course possible to configure FileBot to assume a specific license file location via System Properties and then set them globally via /etc/profile but that'll require more Linux skills and is more prone to multi-user permission problems then just running filebot --license as another user once.
Would you mind trying the latest FileBot Node SPK and confirm that everything works well?
Hi,
I've already tried it and the activation option works correctly. But there is another problem, I can not run Filebot, the "Execute" button is not accessible.

Ah ok great thanks for the suggestion @rednoah.
If anyone else has this same problem, I was successful after creating .cache and .filebot directories inside /var/lib/transmission-daemon directory (user home directory), chown-ing them to the correct user/group (transmission-daemon), and running the command:
Hello. Long time (free) FileBot user, first time commentator.
If I buy FileBot on the Windows Store for $20, will I have to buy this new yearly licence system in the future?
Or should I wait and buy the yearly licence?
Not sure this is the right area, but if the redemption codes are still available to people who give to their community, I am a full time volunteer, working 40 hrs a week to teach the deaf how to communicate using ASL and other basic forms of communication. I am hearing, but have some deaf relatives that motivated me to learn how to help them. I'm no hero, but I might qualify for a licence of this software, if Rednoah sees fit. Thanks for your time.

A Windows Store purchase is a one-time purchase and completely independent of the new yearly licensing system that is managed by myself. If you're only using Windows 10, then I recommend using the Windows Store.

Now that I have my own licensing system, I'm more inclined to just issue you a free 1-year license via my own systems, instead of asking Microsoft for promo codes.
Thank you for the reply Rednoah. Just so I understand clearly, if I buy FileBot through the Windows store now, will I have to eventually buy a yearly license?
If the Windows Store version of FileBot is being removed down the line, to focus on a more direct to consumer method of distribution, it would be smarter of me to buy a year at a time wouldn't it?
Perhaps I misunderstand, and this yearly version of FileBot is only for Linux, etc... and the Windows users of FileBot will always use the version through the App Store.'
Thanks for clearing this up. I'm sure I'm not the only person with this question.

No, not at all. Windows Store purchases are one-time purchases and have no expiration date.

The Windows Store version will not be removed down the line. I personally would recommend using the Windows Store if you're only using Windows, since it makes everything easier. But it's your choice. If you don't like the Windows Store, then you can just download the MSI and purchase a license from me. It's your choice.
Is it possible to purchase a permanent license for Filebot? I'm more of a setup and forget kind of guy and I'd like for service to not be interrupted when I forget to buy a new key.
I'd buy for windows but I'm moving my server over to linux

Sorry, only yearly licenses are available currently.
The one year license is not a subscription though. It's a one time purchase. And that licence will just expire after a year. And then you can decide to purchase a new one. It doesn't automatically renew or anything like that, so you will have to set yourself a reminder to install a new one this time next year. Updating FileBot at least once a year is probably a good idea too.
I might offer life-time license sometime next year when the first licenses expire, but at a significantly high not yet determined price point.

Thanks for the response, I'll pay $6 for now until you hopefully change it next year. I was expecting a lifetime license to be roughly 5-10 times more.
Regardless, Filebot is the best, thanks for your hard work. I'll check back in a year
Yep. I was thinking $50 as well, or maybe $42 because reasons.
If you're willing to wait for a few days, then I could build preliminary support for long-term license and manually issue then on a case by case basis. You're welcome to be my first test subject of you haven't gotten the 1 year license already.
Did you edit the license file in any with with a text editor?
The license will be emailed to you as file attachment, and even though it's a text file, it's best not to touch or modify or copy and paste it since that will break the digital signature for something changes (e.g. BOM, LF, and other invisible characters, that Windows Text Editors like to add.
Your email client should have a Save As / Download option for attachments. Please click that.
I have not changed the file, just downloaded the file from my outlook account using chrome.
Edit:
1. bought the licence
2. received 3 mail in my outlook account, one containing the .psm file
3. downloaded the file using chrome.
4. used the option in Filebot Node UI to upload and activate
5. got error "License Error: unable to verify signature: Signature length not correct: got 255 but was expecting 256"
Edit 2:
So I went and bought a second licence, this time not using my paypal account, and it works.
It seems that it could be related to that my real name contains a ø (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%98 if it dont show up on your screen). What do you think?

I too was wondering about a lifetime option! Upon first hearing About having to pay for a license I admit I was a bit upset. But after literally only a few minutes of thought LOL I realized I have an extensive video library (many terabytes and still going! Lol) and use FB nearly everyday and it saves sooo much time and effort And paying for it only seems fair.
Please be sure to let me/us know as to the progress of this if/when you decide to implement something!

Alright, how do I go about a lifetime license for my Ubuntu system?
As of now, there are only 1 year licenses. Assuming that the current implementation works well, then I might start issuing licenses without expiration date around this time next year, for the price of around ~50 USD.
Though I'm inclined to make life-time licenses available on request for long-term supporters, so things get tested before any kind of larger-scale rollout.
MasterCATZ wrote: 06 Jul 2018, 08:02you pulled the plug on the Ubuntu store
Me? Like I'm quite sure it was Canonical that discontinued their Store and basically gave up on their Desktop story. It's unfortunate. I'm happy to personally reimburse you those $3 though.

This is a GTK message, and it's effectively just a warning message. If FileBot is indeed not working, then the cause is likely completely unrelated to this message.
You can get rid of this warning by installing canberra-gtk-module:

How can i config the format, I think in the lower section is something missing.
I have installed the java, so this error is not there anymore
Been awhile since I had to install FileBot on my raspberrypi... Is this version now supported on Linux? Is there an up-to-date guide on how to install it? There was a lot of extra stuff that needed to be installed.. JNA, JAVA, MediaInfo.. etc... Is this still the case?
Yes. Same as always. You can get the generic Linux package, extract, run, look at the output and fix things as they come up. If you have java working, then it'll probably work out of the box.
sh -xu <<< "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/filebot/plugins/master/installer/tar.sh)"
Native dependencies such as JNA / MediaInfo / etc have always been optional. They're not required to run FileBot, but may be required depending on what you're doing.
Can you provide a screenshot of “nothing happens” please?
Like, what package are you using? SNAP or DEB or TAR? Does the purchase page not open? Or does the browser open but nothing loads? Or JavaScript errors? What browser are you using?
I use FileBot_4.8.2_amd64.deb. What happens is that when I press the purchase link the window containing the options of purchase and registering key just closes. Nothing happens in the browser. No new tabs. I have Firefox as default browser. If I press the register key option however, the expected window opens as it should and I can select the location of the key file.
I see. It should open a link in your browser, which I guess doesn't work on your particular distribution. It works on my Ubuntu 18.04 though. What Desktop environment are you using? Default Gnome Shell? Anything noteworthy to mention that might make your system significantly different from a fresh Ubuntu install?
What does the FileBot error log say, if anything? You can find the error log in your $HOME/.filebot folder.

You need to fill out all the required fields in the UI, e.g. certain combo boxes must not be empty.
2.
says info shows that certain optional components are not working, which is normal on less well supported architectures. You won’t notice; depending on what you’re doing.
Although you now supporting lots of platforms again is great, as someone who recently purchased the Windows Store version for $20, I can't help but have somewhat mixed feelings.
If I was only a Windows user, this would be a non-issue, since you decided to keep supporting the Store version at no additional cost.
Let me first say I have no problems at all with the $6/yr price point, which I think is fair, because it leaves you probably south of $5/customer/yr after taxes, fees and whatnot, which is very fair for the amount of effort you put into this software.
However since I use FileBot on both Windows and Synology, the situation becomes somewhat different for me. Since I would very much like to continue using your updated software, I would obviously purchase a license.
However, since this license also includes a Windows version of the software, my previous purchase, a little over half a year ago (2 jan '18), is now basically useless from my point of view, other than of course providing monetary support to a passionate dev who did provide me with great support during that time.
Now I understand that from your point of view this is obviously not entirely fair, since I did use the software during that half year, which means I certainly got value for my money. It is also still being updated, so the thing I paid for is not going away or being deprecated.
However if I look at it financially, I basically paid the equivalent of 3.3 years of license under the new system, but received the equivalent of half a year of service, since I need/want to purchase a new cross-platform license from now on.
This basically leaves me with 2 options:
Option cheapskate: Revert to the old Synology package, and just keep using that since it actually still works great for my use case. This is far from idea, but functional and the cheapest solution
Option just pay: Purchase a yearly (or lifetime if it gets released) license and hope the licensing system doesn't change yet again, while knowing that I do support you, which should make the purchase feel less bad.
Let me end this post that has become way longer than I intended by saying that this post is not so much meant as criticism, but as feedback, since that is what you requested.
I still appreciate your work, and will probably go with option just pay if I'm being honest, but I just wanted to get this off my chest.

Oh Lord! I must have been tired, just wasn't paying attention...though I would have expected it to be naturally defaulted to something like I feel v4.7.9 was. Per your feedback, I noticed that "Action:" was blank, I changed to "move and rename" and my execute button comes alive!
Quick side question, can we use node.js v8 instead of node.js v4 with your newest release?

I'm currently running Synology with Deluge and Filebot node. I purchased the licence, activated and the node works just fine but I'm having issues running the Deluge Filebot plugin. I get this error
License Error: UNREGISTERED
FileBot requires a valid license. Please run `filebot --license *.psm` as user `sc-deluge` to install your FileBot license.
I'm running the node under the Admin account with an activated license and I don't know if I'm missing something but how do I run the license as the sc-deluge user account so that I can use the Filebot plugin?

If you log in via SSH, then you can use standard Linux tools such as sudo -H -u <user> name to run commands as a different user: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=6033
Hello I tried to install the license with admin and my other admin account.
Got this error:
filebot --license /tmp/
------------------------------------------
Unrecognized option: --illegal-access=permit
Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine.
Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit.

SPK and QPKG packages have been updated so that a license installed as admin also work for other users. You may need to install your license as admin again once for that to work though.
