I can't get FileBot from the Windows app store because the button to buy it is greyed out. I am running in a VM, could that be the problem?

As long as you're logged in with your Microsoft account it should work. Using the latest version of Windows 10 could help too.

Could you send a screenshot of the Microsoft Store page with the grayed out Purchase button?
