FileBot on the Mac App Store

Post by rednoah »

FileBot is available on the Mac App Store as well as an independent macOS bundle.

Here are the key differences:
  • The MAS app works out of the box and does not require you to purchase a FileBot License.
  • The MAS app runs in a sandbox with limited system access. FileBot will have to ask for permissions before accessing files.
  • The MAS app does not support the filebot command-line tools due to Apple restrictions.
  • The MAS app does not support Automator Workflows due to Apple restrictions.
  • The MAS app does not support the FileBot Subtitles feature due to Apple restrictions.
  • The MAS app does not support Apple Silicon due to App Store limitations.
  • The MAS purchase is limited to macOS only and does not enable or entitle you to use FileBot on any other operating system or platform.
  • Apple takes a 30% cut (as opposed to 5% + $0.50 per sale via Paddle) from each and every MAS purchase, so the MAS price is proportionally higher to account for that.

 This information is not available on the Mac App Store product page because "showing irrelevant information to users" is generally prohibited by Apple as per App Store Review Guidelines.

 The independent Mac app bundle has no such restrictions, but requires you to purchase a FileBot license.

FileBot on the Mac App Store

FAQ: I have purchased FileBot via the Mac App Store, but after downloading and installing FileBot it's asking for a license key. What am I doing wrong?

 If you have purchased FileBot via the Mac App Store, then you must install FileBot via the Mac App Store with the same Apple ID. Apple will remember your purchase in your Apple account. FileBot will not ask for a license key if you are using the Mac App Store edition. Please uninstall all versions and editions of FileBot that you may have installed, and then exclusively install FileBot via the Mac App Store.

 If you have downloaded and installed FileBot manually, then you are using the independent edition which requires an independent license key purchased via Paddle directly from this website, as opposed to the Mac App Store edition purchased via the Mac App Store and linked to your Apple ID. Please read FileBot Pricing Explained for details.
