Hi,

I just came across this program and have been reading the forums. It sounds like a very powerful piece of software and should be able to do exactly what I want. The problem I am having is that I don't have a clue how to use it or what to do with the scripts that are posted on this forum. Any chance on giving some basic instructions on what to do with these scripts? My end goal is to automate my media downloading process, pretty much identical to the thread that F12 had posted.

FileBot is very flexible so there is many ways to do this. If you're using utorrent you can use this script at http://filebot.sourceforge.net/forums/v ... 4&t=5#p802 right out of the box and it'll take care of everything. Otherwise just make adjustments depending on what you wanna do and how you download and organize media.

Install it and then run filebot -script path/to/script and that'll get you started. Simple cmdline calls are supported but probably not good enough for more complex logic. You can use predefined scripts directly like in the examples in the link above or patch together your own script for your specific needs.

Just to see if I understand this correctly. Can you verify this for me?

I have downloaded the script "utorrent-postprocess.groovy" and saved it to "E:\Automation\Filebot Scripts".

I thought this would be the correct line to enter into uTorrent, but it didn't seem to work.

"filebot -script E:\Automation\Filebot Scripts\utorrent-postprocess.groovy"

In the script itself, how do I point it to my TV folder? Currently I have my TV shows in "E:\TV Series\Show\Season\". Do I need to replace the line "X:/media" in the script with ""E:\TV Series\"?

Lastly, I don't use XBMC as I have never been able to get it to perform as easily as Windows Media Center. Can I just delete any of the references to XBMC, or will this break the script?

Thanks again for your help. I am very excited to get this working as I can tell from reading the forums filebot will do everything I want it to, once I get it sorted out.

Just paste this line:

Then you just need to modify --output X:/media to your media root folder and it's done. FileBot will automatically organize things into TV Shows / Movies folders. If you don't use xbmc that doesn't matter, this will just silently fail and not affect anything.

-script "C:/path/to/script.groovy" is only necessary if you need to modify the script (e.g. how shows are organized, other customisations). The easiest way is to run with -script "fn:utorrent-postprocess". This will just work out of the box.

Setting the whole thing up should take less then 1 minute unless you're thinking too complicated.

Ok, so I thought I finally had this working but I guess I was wrong.

I've replaced "X:/Media" with "E:/". I saw the script start after a download finished but it didn't seem to do anything, it popped up and then just closed. I thought maybe I should have had "E:\" instead but that didn't seem to work either.

Any suggestions? If I did want to point this to the script I have saved locally, what would I need to replace in the command you posted?

1. slash/backslash doesn't matter. Both is ok. Check the utorrent log and then run that full command with parameters manually in the console. That way you'll see the console output and see what's going on.

2. Local script is ok as well. But don't mess up the quotes. It's filebot -script "path/to/script.groovy" ...

Aha! I figured out what is wrong.

It seems that when I download a show that is a simple .avi file, then everything works properly. If I download a show that is compressed into a .rar file, that is where the problem lies.

Does this script not decompress the downloaded file, or do I need a separate script to do that?

I feel like I am so close to getting this working properly (due to your help of course)... I can almost taste it

rar files should be unpacked automatically. What's the input/output of the script if you run it in the cmdline?

Just came to mind you probably installed FileBot for the wrong architecture. If you have a 64bit Windows but use 32bit Java you must install 32bit FileBot to use native code like mediainfo and 7zip.

After read your post installed 7zip (since I did not have that installed before) in the hopes that would solve my problem. No luck.

I would love now to try what you suggest but this falls back to my post title. I'm a complete beginner, how do I use this script you wrote? I've loaded FileBot but I don't know where to go from there.

Nope, FileBot doesn't need 7-zip installed, it bundles it's own 7-zip libraries but the .msi you install must match your Java runtime.

What I mean with "architecture must match". If you installed FileBot x64 and mediainfo/7zip doesn't work then installing FileBot x86 might solve the problem.

Start cmd.exe (or google a tutorial on how to use windows cmdline) and then copy and paste the cmd from above.

Got it.

When I tried running the cmd you provided the following message was returned...

'java' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

I went to the Java site and made sure I was updated to the latest version, but still get this message.

I have installed the FileBot x64 version. Should I try installing the x86 version instead? My OS is Win 7 64-bit.

You probably have x86 java so you need to install x86 filebot.

Looks like the installer can't set up the PATH so the console can't find that command. If that doesn't work you can just specify the full path to the script, e.g. "C:\Program Files (x86)\FileBot\filebot.cmd" -script ...

Huzzah! Once I added the Java executable directory to my path the problem was solved!

Thank you very much.

Now just need to figure out how to modify this script so that instead of trying to update the XBMC library (which I don't use) it updates the Media Browser library.

utorrent runs the cmd that runs filebot. So you'll have to check in the utorrent forums for that one.

Hi i am new to this and abit of a newb

I have osx and using the tv shows app to dowwnload tvshows when they come out, It then goes into transmission and downloads the folder to movies/tvshows/ and then the folder is put there, I would like it if it could automatically download the tvshow, rename it and then place it in a new folder ie new tvshows.

Is there anyway of doing this or is it wishful thinking!

any help would be great and sorry if this is a repeat.

Just play with the filebot cmdline. Then you can just setup transmission to run certain cmds on download complete. Get comfy with cmdline and things will work itself out.

You can probably make the utorrent-postprocess script work with transmission. Just need to adjust the cmdline call with transmissions variables. I don't use transmission so you have to look into the details yourself.

After checking though some docs I get the feeling transmission doesn't play as nice with external tools as utorrent or deluge. I'm sure it's doable but might need some shell scripting.

Maybe easier to make transmission move completed files to a specific folder then run filebot everytime files are added. I already sent you a link on how to do that with OSX Folder Actions on that other thread.

So I updated my copy of Java the other day and now I am back to my original problem. The CMD window opens once a torrent file finishes downloading, but nothing happens. I updated FileBot in the hopes that would solve the issue but unfortunately it did not. I have not changed any other settings, I've only updated the two programs.

Any thoughts on what I need to do to fix it?

Of course scripting is working, probably something going wrong in the script your using.

Did you read the notes on 3.0? The cmdline syntax for passing in variables changed.

Ok, so I have tried the quick and easy 1 minute install to no avail. When a torrent finishes Windows opens Explorer to C:\Windows\system32 and then stops there. If you could please point me down the right path, I would be grateful. Hopefully resurrecting this thread is not too annoying.

Well that looks perfect. Can't see where there might be a problem. You torrent should be able to call filebot in just the same way.

In the utorrent logger tab you can see exactly what command utorrent is executing. Have you had a look at that? What happens if you copy that into a new console window and run it manually?

I guess I'll have to revert the Groovy engine to an older more stable version with an update later. In the meanwhile you can just disable subtitles. That way you can probably skip the code that's causing that issue.

Reverted Groovy to 2.0.2 and updated all the 3.1 release packages with that. So just download FileBot again and that should fix everything.

I donno, it's not like you're running explorer or anything... make sure you're running the latest utorrent version... maybe you can check the utorrent forums why it would call explorer on system32 rather than just starting the given command like it should.

Is there any logging from utorrent or filebot? Is filebot started at all?

maybe that is it, my torrent tracker requires an older version of utorrent 2.2.1. I could run this as a script correct with task scheduler correct?

Still it shouldn't open explorer, that's just wierd. I know 2.2.1 doesn't have the single|multi torrent parameter but it should work without. I'm pretty sure filebot is not called at all, obviously my script wouldn't open up explorer or anything like that.

You can try running the script with arguments instead of utorrent parameters, check the "Standalone Usage" section of that script.

I saw another tutorial that said it was possible to use links to the files instead of copying to save space on the hdd, is this something built into the utorrent-postprocess script?

That's controlled via --action move|copy|symlink|hardlink

You can check wikipedia for what symlinks and what hardlinks are. Also there is --action keeplink which will move the file but create a symlink at the original location (utorrent doesn't play well with symlinks though). Also on Windows it'll need admin priviledges to create sym/hardlinks.

I completely reinstalled my OS last night, thinking that I may have had a faulty install causing my explorer to act up. When I got everything back up and running the script would not work again. It works in cmd just fine. I noticed when I copied the script there are spaces at the beginning, when I took those out nothing happened when the script ran through utorrent. When I left them there an Explorer window with utorrent installation directory popped up. I was only able to test it once and will try again tonight, so I need to ask are the spaces necessary?

As fat as I know uTorrent just passes the cmdline directly to an new cmd window. Definitely an issue with how uTorrent calls the cmd... Very odd.

What happens if set it to lets say "notepad", does it popup notepad or explorer? Or if you do filebot -version > C:/log.txt 2>&1, does that do anything?

You can just put the cmd into the "whenever torrent changes state" box and then start/stop torrents to trigger it.

Ok notepad pops up when I do notepad. filebot -version > C:/log.txt 2>&1 does not cause anything to happen. This is probably something simple I am missing, thanks for the help.

Well, the filebot call should create a txt file in C:\ called log.txt with filebot version output.

Since that works I suppose there must be something wrong with the command, or how uTorrent executes it. Can u send me a screenshot of utorrents logger tab?

well, filebot itself works perfectly, just something odd with uTorrent calling filebot. Though if it works in cmd, but not in uT I have no idea what's going on. Should be the same thing.

Send me some screenshots of the uTorrent logger tab so I can make sure the cmds are alright.

That looks perfectly fine as well. I suppose it works perfectly if you just copy whole line into the cmd window. Also when it's just calling "filebot" it's starting the GUI application right? Can't see why uTorrent would open an explorer window like this.

When it calls filebot nothing happens, the explorer window is not opening anymore. When it calls notepad, notepad opens. Could I have filebot installed wrong or in a place utorrent can't call it from?

Tested with uT 2.2.1. Works fine for me, startup anyway, though the script doesn't work well with single-file torrents since 2.2.1 doesn't pass the single|multi variable like 3.x does. I guess for some reason utorrent isn't able to run filebot, but by know i've run out of ideas why that would be the case.

I updated and it still did not work, so i gave up and reinstalled 2.2.1. When I installed I right clicked and ran as administrator......and that fixed it all, it works now. Sorry for the trouble and thank you for the help.

Ok the fix was to install uTorrent as admin? Or run as admin? Did you have to install Java/FileBot as admin as well?

PS: I updated the uTorrent script to work better uT 2.2.1

Install as admin, and works perfect with the 2.2.1. Now I want to experiment with the hardlink to save space but continue seeding.

Hardlinks obviously only work on the se drive, also make sure uTorrent is running as admin, because filebot needs admin priviledges to create Hardlinks on windows.

@kiloback On Windows I have no idea how to redirect and print output, on Linux/Mac it's tee:

Doesn't work in Windows CMD but luckily for you it works in Windows PowerShell, e.g.

Long story short, you can see any normal file as hardlink, if you create another hardlink, there'll just be another one, with a different path, but on disk it'll be the same exact data, two files that are actually one and the same, hence there is no original file. There is data on the disk and two files pointing to it. Only if you delete both files will the OS free the data on disk.

thanks for the info ,because its not native to windows i have to use a commandline utility like "mtee" which im using right now to get the results.
and about hardlink can it link from another partition but same disk?

Nope, has to be the same filesystem, i.e. same drive/partition.

That's exactly what it's not. On Windows a Shortcut is a normal file, it's data is the path to the actual file.

What you need to understand is that files are links to physical data on the disk. In simple terms, any file is a hardlink in that it point to data on the harddisk. Creating a hardlink means copying the pointer to the data, not the data itself, meaning you have two files pointing to the same physical data. There is no 1-original-1-copy as both are the original.

the cool web interface, does that publish to a port, or does it only work if you launch it from a gui interface? I have ubuntu server, I installed the .deb package, but I don't know where to go from here. Am I just using the CLI? I've got everything working great on that box (sabnzbd, transmission, couchpotato, sickbeard) the problem is, that process doesn't work 100% of the time. filebot looks like it could be the final piece of the puzzle. I want to clean up downloads that don't work. I mainly want to have it see a movie folder, rename the folder and files beneath correctly (conforming to Plex's standards), and put it in my media library. Is it easy to get there from here?

There is no web interface. You can easily integrate FileBot with any download tool that can run commands on newly downloaded files. See the CLI and Scripting pages for details and have a look at the utorrent-postprocess script.
