Stupid newbie question: Does FileBot need to be running...?

Post by Data1001 »

Sorry, I know this is probably a really dumb question — however, I tried finding the answer on my own by searching this forum and also a general Google search, and I came up short.

I just downloaded and installed one of the scripts which adds the ability to watch folders via the context menu. What I'm wondering is if FileBot needs to be running in the background at all times in order for the "folder watch" to work? :?

Thanks in advance!

FileBot includes no such feature. If you have questions about 3rd party software and tools you should ask the authors of said software. ;)

AFAIK the context menu integration is not actively maintained and may or may not work. Unless you can figure out how it works by yourself, it's probably not something you want to be using.

Hmm... not to be overly snarky in my reply, but I'm a little confused by your response. I saw that you were very active in that thread, so are you saying you don't have an idea of what it does and how it works in conjunction with FileBot? I'm not really asking a "support" question, just a simple query as to how "3rd party tools", as you call them, work with FileBot.

The author of that script, Ithiel, created it for people like me so we don't have to spend the incredible man-hours to figure out how to do something like this on our own. I'm no coder, but I've done very basic scripting stuff before (albeit with a fair amount of trial and error and research). Were I to dig into this particular script, and spend 20 or 40 hours (or more) getting to know all the ins and outs of how it all worked, I'm sure I could figure out what everything does. But beyond the fact that I don't want to do that, I really have no need to do that, as long as it does what it's supposed to do... which it apparently did, quite well, and thus, the only thing I have a question about now is whether or not it requires the the FileBot program to be running in the background in order to process the subtitle downloads, renaming, or however else I might want the new files in my watched folders to be processed.

Yes, you're right, I could have sent Ithiel a PM or asked my question in that particular thread (I figured it would unnecessarily clutter that thread, being something that I thought most everyone else there already knew the answer to — thus, why I posted a new thread). And I may end up doing one of those things now. Or I could've taken the (admittedly relatively small amount of) time to test it out both with FileBot running and with it not running, to learn for myself what's required. My thinking was just that with all the people active in that thread, somebody here on this forum could more quickly and easily answer what seemed to me to be a simple (and yes, stupid) question. :geek:

I mean that Ithiel is unlikely to ever see this thread, unless you post a link in the original context menu thread, or send him a PM. ;)

AFAIK the context menu integration consists of simple filebot command-line calls. If you have trouble with filebot command-line calls I can of course help you with that, and I guess that's what I did in the original thread some years ago.

If you have trouble with certain command-line calls, I'll need the exact command that is executed as well as the full console output.

If you say "I context menu item XYZ and nothing happens" then I can't really help with that. I don't even have a Windows computer to test any of this right now.

I appreciate the reply. But actually, upon testing several things in this context menu addon, I don't think it's working at all for me. In fact, I had problems doing a direct fetching of subtitles within the FileBot gui itself, so I may keep looking for other options out there. Thanks again, though.

You will need to enter your OpenSubtitles username/password before any of that will work. The GUI should give you some sort of error message is something is not working.

Yes, I did that. No error messages.

But it's all good... like I said, I think I'll find something that is a better fit for me. Feel free to delete this thread, if you want.
